There is actually no clear definition of a gemstone. Most of the time it is a mineral, such as Diamond, Aquamarine, Tourmaline and others.
But it can also be a mineral aggregate, such as Opal, Turquoise etc. Even organic compounds can be gemstones, such as petrified wood or Amber . And these days it can be also synthetic, but this is a wide field, that we do not cover here. V&S only produces gemstones from minerals, that can be found in nature.
In general a gemstone is something with exceptional properties. This can be its beauty, hardness, colour, shine and/or the fact that it is rare to find.
As beauty is an important characteristic of a gemstone, it is usally cut or polished to improve the transparancy, shine and colour.
Gemstones can be found in many places around the world, like Brasil, Australia, India, Russia and more
As V&S is located in Namibia, we concentrate on gemstones that can be found in southern Africa and we skip diamonds, that countries like Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa are famous for. V&S does not use diamonds.
